Samsung Galaxy S5: Australian telco availability and plans

Details on who will stock the Galaxy S5 and updates to come on pricing

Samsung has finally revealed its Galaxy S5 and we’re pleased to report the flagship represents a significant upgrade over its Galaxy S4 predecessor. Samsung isn’t wasting any time saying it will roll out the phone in almost 100 markets by 11 April, 2014. Unfortunately, Samsung hasn’t confirmed if Australia is one of the lucky markets.

Update, 7 March: Samsung has officially sent out invitations to an Australian launch event for the Galaxy S5. For more information, click here.

The upcoming S5 includes a range of upgrades over the current S4. These include an improved 16MP camera, biometric security, a heart monitor, a faster CPU, and resistance to water and dust. For a more detailed breakdown of the new features, feel free to check out our original rundown on the Galaxy S5.

Below you will find a cheat sheet that details which Australian carriers will be stocking the device. It will be updated to reflect news on local pricing and availability as more information becomes available.

Vodafone

A Vodafone representative has confirmed to Good Gear Guide the telco will be stocking Samsung’s Galaxy S5; however, they couldn’t disclose if the company had an interest in Samsung’s Galaxy Gear watches. A registration page dedicated to the Galaxy S5 has gone live and you can be directed to it by clicking here.

None

Optus

Moments after Samsung announced the Galaxy S5, Optus rushed to confirm it will be ranging the smartphone. Unfortunately the telco hasn’t released any other details. If you’re interested in Optus’ plans and pricing for the Galaxy S5, simply register your interest by clicking here.

Telstra

Samsung’s Galaxy S5 will be available on Telstra’s Next G network. The carrier confirmed to Good Gear Guide it will be stocking the device, but “no formal dates” have been set yet. The carrier is also “looking at” Samsung’s new range of smartwatches — the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit.

We will keep you posted on any updates, but it will be worthwhile pre-registering your interest on the company’s website by clicking here.

None

Virgin Mobile

Virgin Mobile has informed us they intend on ranging Samsung's Galaxy S5, but the carrier has not provided any other details so far on the matter. The carrier added: "In terms of the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit, we’ll be able to provide more information shortly, but we’re not able to confirm at this stage unfortunately."

If you are looking to sign up with Virgin, you will have to visit its site regularly as, at the time or writing, there is no option to register your interest.

Dick Smith

Retailer Dick Smith has announced it will be selling the Samsung Galaxy S5 - presumably outright. The retailer has created a dedicated registration page here.

None

Kogan

Boisterous etailer Kogan has “been forced to set up a pre-registration page” for the Samsung Galaxy S5 after being “inundated with requests” from prospective customers. Kogan did mention something we do agree with in its press release, and that is “the huge initial influx of demand suggests [Samsung’s Galaxy S5] will be incredibly popular here in Australia”.

Kogan is promising "early bird deals" for people who pre-register with the etailer, although no additional details have been provided.

Kogan does have a history of offering products at a competitive price. However, before you commit to buying a smartphone from the etailer, be sure it is spec-for-spec identical to what Australian retailers are offering. The best way to do this is to double check the product numbers are identical. Samsung

To register for the Samsung Galaxy S5 from Kogan, simply click here.

Last update: Kogan pre-registration details added on 3 March.

For work use, Microsoft Word and Excel programs pre-installed on the device are adequate for preparing short documents.

LIFEBOOK UH574

The Fujitsu LifeBook UH574 allowed for great mobility without being obnoxiously heavy or clunky. Its twelve hours of battery life did not disappoint.

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

STYLISTIC Q702

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
