Mercedes F1 team picks Pure Storage for race pace data transfer

The Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team has picked flash storage company, Pure Storage, to provide drives to its mobile datacentre for the 2016 Formula One season.

The reigning F1 world champion requires fast analysis of data-centric transactions that impact car performance and lap time. It chose the storage maker for the increased read and write speeds its technology provides.

Mercedes-Benz Motorsport principal, Toto Wolff, said technology was fundamental to the team’s success as it enables it to perform across the business and on the track.

“As we are predicting one of the most challenging and competitive seasons in the year ahead, Pure will give us the power we need to tackle our most demanding data challenges,” he added.

The Mercedes team requires an infrastructure that is portable and capable of handling the large amount of data it creates in testing and on race weekends.

It said putting performance-critical workloads at risk of availability in the Cloud was a concern. It was seeking to enhance service availability and prevent disruption of data transfer.

Mercedes AMG Petronas head of IT, Matt Harris, explained the team had previously virtualised storage to the point where we could introduce whatever vendor was right at the time.

“We soon realised that building a nuanced architecture on an intricate stack translated into building something far too complex – complexity on top of complexity,” he added.

“The choice was clear once we realised we could eliminate bulky, heavy hardware, improve our performance and actually save money taking the technology with us around the world.

“Pure Storage’s Evergreen business model removed the anxiety of the traditional storage renewal. The typical concerns about future issues – capacity, upgrades, maintenance and how much it will all cost us again – are no longer an issue. We were able to immediately focus on getting the technology in the door and impacting the business as quickly as possible.”

The Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team has won the FIA Formula One championship the last two years running. It will begin defence of its title in Melbourne on March 18.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730

I've had a multifunction printer in the office going on 10 years now. It was a neat bit of kit back in the day -- print, copy, scan, fax -- when printing over WiFi felt a bit like magic. It’s seen better days though and an upgrade’s well overdue. This HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 looks like it ticks all the same boxes: print, copy, scan, and fax. (Really? Does anyone fax anything any more? I guess it's good to know the facility’s there, just in case.) Printing over WiFi is more-or- less standard these days.

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.
