Fujifilm’s FinePix M603 is more like a multifunction device than a run-of-the-mill digital camera. This stylish, ultracompact camera offers users the choice of capturing still images at a resolution of 3.1-megapixels or recording video with audio at 15 or 30fps. Users can even add voice memos to still images via the built-in microphone located in the top of the camera. File formats supported include JPEG for still images, AVI and MJPEG for video, and WAV for audio.
The M603 offers dual media slots for two types of memory cards. The newly developed xD (extreme digital) picture card is the successor to the ageing SmartMedia format and is proprietary to Fujifilm. Roughly the size of a postage stamp, the xD picture card offers faster read/write speeds and low power consumption. The camera’s second slot supports more common Compact Flash cards, specifically IBM’s Microdrive, which can store 15 minutes of video at 30fps and 30 minutes at 15fps.
When viewing the captured images, playback via the 2.5in TFT LCD screen is absolutely stunning. The images are incredibly crisp and clear; the screen alone has a resolution of 118,000 pixels. The layout design of the control buttons located on the side of the camera and below the LCD screen is very easy to use. The camera chassis is solidly built and is a joy to hold when capturing images.
Bundled with the camera are some great accessories, including a handgrip for steady shooting, a monitor hood to shield the LCD display, plus FinePix Viewer, ImageMixer VCD and Apple Quicktime 5.0 software. The quick setup guide, user manual and quick start guide for the bundled software all contribute to the excellence of this unique camera.
In brief: Fujifilm FinePix M603
This vertically designed camera is suited to people ‘on the go’ who want to capture that ultimate image, be it still or video.
