Compaq recalls Armada battery packs

The battery packs in question were distributed globally in the notebooks or as separate options or replacement spares, Compaq said in a statement Friday announcing the recall, done in cooperation with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. Customers with the batteries will receive two free battery packs for each recalled pack at no cost.

The Compaq statement noted that there have been other recent battery recalls by other computer manufacturers, but said its recall is believed to be unrelated. Dell earlier this month also recalled batteries that have the potential to overheat, smoke and catch fire. In Compaq's case, one battery pack manufactured between June 2 and July 10 of this year overheated, released smoke and damaged a notebook computer. That's the only incident that has been reported, Compaq said.

The recalled battery pack can be identified by a date code and serial number listed on the white label to the right of the battery connector. These are the date codes and serial numbers being recalled: TCGK 00001-10500; TCGK 20001-21800; TCGK 40001-83100; TCHK 40001-44700.

Customers are being asked to immediately stop using the batteries and to remove them from the notebook computer. The Compaq battery recall Web site is http://www.compaqordercenter.com/sbrp/cl.asp. Customers should contact Compaq immediately for a replacement or through the Web site or local global customer support telephone numbers.

LIFEBOOK UH574

The Fujitsu LifeBook UH574 allowed for great mobility without being obnoxiously heavy or clunky. Its twelve hours of battery life did not disappoint.

STYLISTIC Q702

The screen was particularly good. It is bright and visible from most angles, however heat is an issue, particularly around the Windows button on the front, and on the back where the battery housing is located.

STYLISTIC Q702

My first impression after unboxing the Q702 is that it is a nice looking unit. Styling is somewhat minimalist but very effective. The tablet part, once detached, has a nice weight, and no buttons or switches are located in awkward or intrusive positions.
