Microsoft media player to make big-screen debut

The film, Quantum Project, stars Stephen Dorff, John Cleese and Fay Masterson and will be screened at Pittsburgh's Star City Cinemas.

The three companies said they want to showcase the cost-effectiveness and quality of digital cinema.

SightSound's Digital Cinema System is a modified version of the streaming video system the company developed to distribute movies to homes from its servers over the Internet. The film will be transmitted, encrypted, to the cinema, where a computer workstation with two Pentium III processors will play the movie using Microsoft's Windows Media Video 8 software through a Panasonic video projector. SightSound's technology will stream data at an average of 4.1Mbps to display an image 1280 by 1024 pixels in size.
