Pioneer Shows Off First DVD-R/RW Drive

The drive is compatible with the write-once DVD-R format and the rewritable DVD-RW format, said company representatives at the exhibition. It accepts single-sided DVD-R discs, which have a capacity of 3.95GB, and single-sided DVD-RW discs, with a capacity of 4.7GB.

Because it was shown as a prototype, little other information was available about the drive at the exhibition, although the company said it will be officially launched at the upcoming Comdex Fall show in the US. It is expected to be available in stores in early 2001.
