Nokia, Sonera complete GPRS roaming tests

GPRS roaming will allow subscribers of one operator to use mobile Internet services while in an area covered by another operator's services. The tests were strictly technical with engineers from Sonera and Nokia, testing the basic IP connection, DNSes (domain name servers) and the like, according to Janne Pesu, a spokesman for Sonera.

"We just wanted to make sure everything worked," he said. The testing was also between Sonera's own network and Nokia's test network, as opposed to crossing two commercial networks.

"We're already in commercial talks with operators on several continents; we'll be announcing those agreements within the next couple of weeks," Pesu added.
