The machine is currently only available in Japan and has been on sale for just under five months. At this pace, sales of the machine are four times that of the company's original PlayStation when it first went on sale, SCEI said in a statement. The majority of buyers are existing PlayStation owners, although some 30 percent of customers for the new machine are new users, the company said.
The company also said sales of the PSone machine, a new version of its first generation PlayStation console, have hit 270,000 since launch on July 7. The machine, which is smaller than the original console but otherwise largely unchanged, was launched by SCEI to boost the market for the first generation format; which has been flagging since the more advanced PlayStation 2 machine was launched.
