Telstra's ADSL Service: High Price For Speed

It should reach 90 percent of Australian homes and businesses in mid 2002, according to the company.
Despite its advantages such as higher Internet access speeds and the fact that it does not tie up a phone line, Telstra's ADSL service is among the most expensive in the world for residential customers, admitted Denis Mullane, Telstra's ADSL project director. He said that the prices reflect the higher speed Internet access and other benefits not offered by dial-up services.
Residential Customers who have a telephone/voice account with Telstra will pay $78 per month for the 256/64Kpbs service and $89 a month for 512/128Kbps, while non-Telstra voice customers will pay $94.50 and $105.50 respectively.
For business customers, Telstra is offering download packages of 250 and 500 megabytes. They will pay between $73 and $116 depending on the speed and download package they want. For non-Telstra voice customers, costs go up to between $89.50 and $132.50.
These prices include an ADSL modem, but installing the service will cost customers between $189 and $399 depending on the length of their contract.
