Video capture
MediaStudio Pro 6.0 offers templates to ensure all project parameters are adjusted correctly at the start of a project. When beginning a new project, you can either open a template to use existing settings or create your own template with the creation wizard.
With MediaStudio 6.0 you can capture and view video from VCRs, TVs, laser discs or camcorders, and have the ability to source content from multiple tapes. MediaStudio 6.0's ability to edit DV natively using a DV/D8 camcorder and a FireWire card is probably the biggest new feature. DV capture means there is no conversion loss moving video information from an analog source (camcorder) to digital content (PC hard drive), and back to analog tape. When working with DV, the information stays digital at all times.
MediaStudio Pro 6.0 has also introduced MPEG-2 capture with software only, allowing you to edit MPEG-2 natively using any analog capture board that supports RGB or YUV drivers.
Other significant improvements include batch capture. While previewing original source video using Device Control, you can set mark-in and mark-out time codes into a batch capture list. Choose your capture preferences and your selected video segments are batch captured and saved as separate files ready to be edited.
Video editor
Following critical feedback from users that the interface was too restrictive, the timeline, toolbars, production library and various windows can now be floated outside the program window, or rearranged within the program window.
Professional track controls allow you to lock and protect tracks from changes, temporarily disable tracks or select entire tracks with a single click. Display options for clips include filmstrip, filename, thumbnail or colour modes.
Independent source and preview windows have been introduced. You can add an extra monitor or place multiple cuts on the timeline from one source clip, without repeatedly dragging the same raw clip to the timeline.
The Smart Render tools were a popular feature of 5.2 and have been further improved to provide quicker render times. Smart Check and Convert ensures all files in a project conform to the project settings. Smart Relink automatically relinks lost files, and Smart Trim deletes trimmed video not used in the project, to save disk space.
Ripple edits
The ripple editing aspects of MediaStudio Pro 6.0 have been improved and include Push Away Insertion of clips. Ripple editing controls the behaviour of other clips in your timeline when you insert clips. Push Away Insertion allows you to insert entire clips on the timeline. It also works on clips that are dragged from one location to another or are pasted into the timeline.
Audio editor
Audio Editor gives you control over the soundtrack. You can play, record and edit with drag-and-drop actions the audio components of video projects. Add fades and echo effects quickly and easily.
New in MediaStudio Pro 6.0 is support for MP3 audio to be used as background music, sound effects or when creating content for streaming on the Web. Other improvements include automatic audio cross fades and an audio decibel display with fade nodes on the timeline.
The rest of the suite
Not much has changed with the rest of the suite. Video Paint is a complete set of rotoscoping tools for painting and retouching directly on video. Clone between clips and record brush strokes to produce high-end video painting results. CG Infinity is a vector-based character generator for designing professional-quality animated titles and motion graphics for video overlays.
If you feel limited by VideoStudio 4.0 or Videowave III and don't want to fork out $1500 for Premiere 5.1, look at MediaStudio Pro 6.0.
