Modern Warfare 2's misunderstood terrorist level 17/11/2009 01:36:00

Has there ever been video or photo coverage of terrorist violence that hasn't seemed somehow detached from it? All our images of Oklahoma City are post-op shots of a cratered nine-story federal building. Videos of the planes crashing into the Twin Towers are generally from distant vantages. The short clips of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold terrifying fellow high school students with Hi-Point 995 carbines and TECH-DC9 semi-automatic pistols played endlessly by cable news channels are from blurred, black and white security cameras, and Harris and Klebold aren't in most of them.

Modern Warfare 2 pulls $310m on day one in US and UK 13/11/2009 02:08:00

Activision says Modern Warfare 2 raked in an astonishing $310m on its first day of sales, a claim which, if accurate, would make it the biggest and fastest selling entertainment launch in history, annihilating sales records in every other medium.

Should we reject Modern Warfare 2 because it's violent? 12/11/2009 02:18:00

Marybeth Hicks calls Modern Warfare 2 "barbaric and harmful to the psyche of anyone" who plays it. She wants you to 'reject violent video games' and she's trained her sights on Activision's popular military shooter. The news yesterday was confusing, she argues, because it balanced the memorial service held for the 13 Americans who recently lost their lives in a tragic military-base shooting, against the release of a critically acclaimed military wargame expected to generate record entertainment industry revenue.

PC Modern Warfare 2 locked in Steam time vault 11/11/2009 01:37:00

If you purchased a copy of Modern Warfare 2 through Steam, caveat emptor, because you won't be able to play it today along with everyone else. Yes, Infinity Ward's operatic military-shooter goes on sale today for Windows, Xbox 360, or PlayStation 3 platforms at brick-and-mortar retailers -- in fact the game went on sale unofficially several days ago when GameStop corporate loosed the hounds on street-date-snapping mom-and-pop stores and phoned their pre-sells to come in and snatch up copies.

Evony girls on film, porn style 10/11/2009 06:36:00

Oh Evony, you're such a tease, what with brazenly ripping off Civilization luminary Sid Meier, then wrapping his respected oeuvre in your tinsel-tawdry images of fake or stripping or occasionally flat-out stolen females. I'd ask "Have you no shame?" but even that's a rhetorical question wrapped in a riddle inside an utter redundancy.

Boycott over Modern Warfare 2 with Steam 'Trojan Horse' 09/11/2009 11:18:00

Steam, it seems, may finally have tromped across the proverbial bridge too far. The online PC games storefront with the sales leverage of a lion but the transparency of a two-way mirror reportedly signed a deal with Activision to load its Steamworks technology into retail and digitally distributed PC copies of Modern Warfare 2, and its online competitors are bristling.

    BioWare's Flash-based Dragon Age Journeys available now 24/10/2009 05:13:00

This was unexpected, a freebie Flash-based role-playing aperitif from BioWare that's part Diablo, part Baldur's Gate, part "free prize inside!" It's called Dragon Age Journeys, and it's a tactical RPG with stylish cartoon-style art squeezed between the margins of your average-sized browser window. Who says these guys aren't taking it the extra mile in the run up to Dragon Age Origins, their Godzilla-sized PC and console roleplaying game due in a few weeks?

The Sorry State of Windows 7 Gaming 22/10/2009 01:10:00

Windows 7 is finally upon us, leaping off retail shelves in little blue- and green- and black-lined plastic containers in a matter of hours. With the critical plaudits, expect enthusiastic midnight sales, curious micro-throngs of buyers, and swollen message boards deluged by "impressions" confessionals from first-timers who somehow missed the endless betas and previews and release candidates foisted on us like fistfuls of Halloween candy. No Rolling Stones or Jerry Seinfeld this time, true, but that's all part of Windows 7's unassuming shtick -- less whiz, more bang.
