    Batman: Arkham City 20/10/2011 16:00:00

I once thought I’d never live to see the release of a truly great modern Batman game. A bit pessimistic perhaps, but I just didn’t think anybody could do the Dark Knight justice. Sure, it's possible to make a game that looks good, but can it be done without completely bastardising the original Batman mythology?

    Dead Island 19/09/2011 12:38:00

I’m a sucker for zombies. In a world where vampires now glitter in the sunlight and werewolves turn into unrealistically buff teenagers, zombies have remained true to form. Not much has changed over the years, and they’re still depicted as mindless undead, savage and hungry for flesh. There’s something very visceral about that.

Shadows of the Damned 26/07/2011 15:46:00

When two video game legends decide to make a game, a certain calibre is expected. Shinji Mikami (of Resident Evil fame) and Goichi Suda, who previously co-wrote and directed Killer7, have now served up Shadows of the Damned -- a third-person shooter-cum-survival horror title starring a suave Latino demon hunter and his loquacious shape-shifting demon-weapon pal.

Ten years can be a lifetime in the video games industry, given that mini-revolutions can occur in the space of just a year. Socom: Special Forces 27/04/2011 14:20:00

--There are shooter games where you can use cool vehicles. There are shooter games where you have a bunch of AI companions to help you out. But not often do you get a game where you can command your AI to execute strategies to snuff out the enemy. Which is why Socom: Special Forces (Socom 4 -- known as Socom: US Navy SEALs in some regions) is a welcome addition to the tactical third-person shooter genre.

    Portal 2 20/04/2011 10:43:00

I genuinely don’t think Valve predicted the mammoth success Portal would achieve. Squeezing the game between two renowned titles and releasing it in The Orange Box|Best games round-up was a hint. The single player puzzle-platformer from 2007 left such a mark on the gaming world that four years later, dedicated fans -- including myself -- held even higher hopes for Portal 2.
