What's the best way to charge your mobile devices?

You're packing for a trip. You've already crammed the chargers for your smartphone and laptop into your bag, but your tablet charger is MIA and you're debating whether to bring along a spare charger for your laptop--just in case.

Your camcorder questions answered

It's been a few months since I answered some reader questions, so I've opened up the mailbag once again. Here are the answers to a few questions I often get asked about camcorders and digital video.

Exclusive: First Vista PC tests

It's been a long wait, but Windows Vista PCs are here. We evaluated the first batch of desktop systems preloaded with Microsoft's new operating system -- and the results of our exclusive benchmark performance tests show that even sub-US$,1000 systems...

HD DVD-equipped PC comes at a price

HP's Pavilion Media Center TV m7690n home-theater-ready PC is optimized for high definition. I looked at a shipping unit of this desktop, which is the company's first to include an HD DVD drive. The system performed admirably in our performance tests...

The best PC deals under $1000

Think you have to bust your budget for a peppy new desktop PC? Think again. Sure, you can mortgage the farm for a fancy US$4000 gaming rig; but if your needs are modest, you can buy a decent, stylish system for a whole lot less. For this review we st...

Fujifilm FinePix S5200

The Fujifilm S5200 is fast in a number of ways. For one thing, it starts up quickly: It was ready to shoot in about a second after we turned the power on, and shutter lag was less than half a second. That's quick enough to ensure that you wouldn't mi...

Olympus SP-500 Ultra Zoom

The Olympus SP-500 Ultra Zoom is the lowest-priced advanced camera we've ever examined. Previously, the PC World Test Center tested the SP-500 as a point-and-shoot model. But after its impressive performance in that category, we chose to test its met...

New HD camcorder format explained

Some would say that we need another camcorder format like we need a hole in the head -- enough different formats out there confuse buyers already. Camcorder manufacturers seem to disagree, though: Panasonic, Sony, and others have recently announced a...

Home movie questions answered

A few months back, I wrote a column about copying my home movies to DVD. It generated a lot of questions from readers, so this month I'm digging through my mailbag. Here are the answers to some of the questions you asked.

Olympus FE-120

You might assume that a budget camera like the Olympus FE-120 takes subpar photos. But you'd be wrong: In our tests this 6-megapixel unit delivered very attractive photos, earning top points from our jury of reviewers, who were impressed with the ac...

High definition's real meaning

I've been spending some quality time with the high-definition Sony HDR-HC3 over the past couple of weeks, and I think I might have to do something that we professional writers don't like to do: admit that I may have been wrong.

From VHS to DVD

Copying your home movies from videotapes to more durable DVD doesn't have to be difficult or time-consuming. Here's how we did it.

Set your movies to music

Looking for legal music to enhance your videos? Here's where you can find all sorts of cool tunes that won't get you in trouble.

A question of (white) balance

If you've bought a new camcorder, you've probably spent some time scrolling through the controls, pressing buttons to see what happens. And you probably came across one particular control that you didn't recognize: white balance. You may have wondere...

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730

I've had a multifunction printer in the office going on 10 years now. It was a neat bit of kit back in the day -- print, copy, scan, fax -- when printing over WiFi felt a bit like magic. It’s seen better days though and an upgrade’s well overdue. This HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 looks like it ticks all the same boxes: print, copy, scan, and fax. (Really? Does anyone fax anything any more? I guess it's good to know the facility’s there, just in case.) Printing over WiFi is more-or- less standard these days.

Windows 10 for Business / Dell XPS 13

I’d happily recommend this touchscreen laptop and Windows 10 as a great way to get serious work done at a desk or on the road.

Windows 10 / HP Spectre x360

Ultimately, I think the Windows 10 environment is excellent for me as it caters for so many different uses. The inclusion of the Xbox app is also great for when you need some downtime too!

Windows 10 / Lenovo Yoga 910

For me, the Xbox Play Anywhere is a great new feature as it allows you to play your current Xbox games with higher resolutions and better graphics without forking out extra cash for another copy. Although available titles are still scarce, but I’m sure it will grow in time.
