    CD & DVD: Mixed Business 14/03/2005 08:58:03

The unpleasantness of noise can affect more than your ears - it's a problem that frequently appears in photography, too. Digital image noise is the appearance of random changes to the colour of pixels. Unfortunately, even small doses are so effective at ruining an image that you'll end up reaching for the delete button.

    Run, disc, run 28/02/2005 13:51:04

Autorun CDs and DVDs can be a great way to distribute photographs, business presentations, videos and all sorts of other files. All your audience needs to do is pop the disc into a PC and the information magically appears. Judging by the number of questions I receive on this topic, it's clear that most people find the creation of autoruns to be a frustrating affair. However, you may be surprised to learn that all you need is a couple of lines of simple code and an understanding of a few autorun "rules".

Imaging: Gaining a sense of perspective 02/02/2005 07:21:26

Sometimes we see life from a different angle to our cameras. And that's not always a good thing.

Graphics: The clearer picture: Part II 26/11/2004 08:41:32

It's a sad fact that blurring sometimes will creep into photographs which cannot be retaken. The problem can be knocked back with a graphics editor but, unfortunately, the more drastic blurs can't be fixed - and some repairs may introduce unwanted effects. As always, it's best to avoid the problem when taking the picture rather than deal with the consequences. See last month's story.

Graphics: The clearer picture, Part I 22/10/2004 08:59:25

There's nothing quite like the feeling you get when you find that a special picture has been ruined by blurring. It's a surprisingly common problem, often aggravated by the huge range of features in digital cameras.

CD And DVD: Back from the Grave 08/10/2004 08:19:04

Some CDs die gracefully, while others give up the ghost soon after being burned. How do you know which CDs are dying and, more importantly, what steps can be taken to recover data that appears to be lost? You could lie in bed worrying about it, or you could try these simple steps instead.

Graphics: Recovering lost images 17/09/2004 08:31:09

We've all done it. A brief lapse of concentration and your precious photos are sent to oblivion; a small human error and key files are deleted from your hard drive. Although it may seem like it at the time, it's not the end of the world, as it's often possible to resurrect images from hard drives and memory cards - even if the card has been formatted. All you need are the right tools, quick action, and a little luck.

Working with ISO files 15/09/2004 08:05:36

We have previously introduced ISOs in the tutorial CD and DVD images; this month, we focus on creating an ISO. There are two basic approaches to creating an ISO, but bear in mind that you can't create functional ISOs from copy-protected discs such as commercial movie DVDs. You can build one from files on your hard drive, or you can convert an existing CD/DVD to an ISO file. The techniques will vary between programs and, unfortunately, many leading packages make the process unnecessarily complex.
