Introduction: Pillar, Oracle, and the Storage Market

With its July 2011 purchase of Pillar Data Systems, Oracle has added the Pillar Axiom 600 storage system to its expanding range of storage products. Axiom represents a modular, scalable, highly available, high-performance, general-purpose (block mode) storage array. To those valuable generic capabilities, Axiom adds specific value, such as the use of pervasive “Quality of Service” (QoS) and application profiles, which—together with integration with Oracle features and products such as Hybrid Columnar Compression and Storage Archive Manager (SAM)—make it very well-suited to hosting Oracle Database and Oracle Applications offerings.
