    It's ironic: The copy protection created to stop the illegal copying of DVDs is the same technology that has prevented users from legally downloading paid-for content and then burning it to a DVD for playback in their living rooms. At the time the copy-protection rules were created, they had no provision for user recording of protected content to a recordable DVD, as opposed to a factory-replicated DVD-ROM.

    Plextor announces Blu-ray disc drive 28/08/2006 20:27:42

    The shop aisle selling Blu-ray Disc burners is about to get more crowded: Plextor announced today its PC-B900A Blu-ray Disc Drive. Like Sony's Blu-ray Disc drive, the BWU-100A, and I-O Data's BRD-UM2/U, this model will support writing to dual-layer 50GB Blu-ray Discs. The Plextor drive comes with a well-rounded software bundle that includes Ulead's DVD MovieFactory 5, BD DiscRecorder and Burn.Now 1.5, Data-Add 2.0, and VideoStudio 10 Plus; and InterVideo's WinDVD BD for Blu-ray Disc playback. (In other news, InterVideo--which also owns Ulead--was acquired by Corel.)

    It wasn’t long ago that CD burners were rare, and now almost every PC has at least a CD or even a DVD burner. This is not surprising since CD burner prices have crashed through $100, a mere fraction of what you would have expected to pay back in the late 1990s. Burning a CD is relatively easy, but the details of working with CDs and DVDs can be confusing. That’s why we are starting a new column specifically geared towards CDs and DVDs. To get the ball rolling, this month we will cover the issue of burning speed.
