Five ways to overclock a netbook (really!) 28/10/2009 04:05:00

The words overclocking and netbook appear in a sentence together about as often as Steve Ballmer is spotted at a Linux convention. Netbooks are all about portability over performance. Overclocking is all about taking already blazing-fast gear and pushing it to its upper limits -- warranties, energy use and safety be damned. Right?

    MSI Wind 12 U200 netbook 19/10/2009 15:30:00

MSI's Wind 12 U200 is the first netbook we've seen to ship with Windows 7 straight out of the box. However, with a 12.1in screen and an Intel Core 2 Solo CPU, we're loathe to call it a netbook. It's much bigger than a conventional netbook and a good deal faster, so you can do a lot more with it than just browse the Web and create office documents. And it's much more comfortable to use!

Install Windows 7 on your netbook in under 30 minutes 19/10/2009 14:00:00

While the easiest way to install Windows 7 on a netbook is by booting from an external DVD drive, it’s probably not worth spending $100 on a drive that you won’t use more than a few times. It’s much more economical to use a 4GB USB key, which will only set you back $10-15. And it will also be quicker and more convenient!

    MSI GX620 gaming notebook 09/10/2009 14:50:00

The MSI GX620 is a mid-range 15.4in gaming laptop -- and it sure looks like it's built for gamers. It has brushed aluminium panels and a red trim, touch-sensitive multimedia shortcut buttons and a number pad. The W, A, S and D keys and the number pad's 8,4,6 and 2 keys all have arrows printed on them to remind you that they can be used to control your character while gaming. The big vent and clearly visible heat sink on the right side are indicators that this notebook is built to run taxing tasks, though it's by no means a high-end notebook.

    MSI X-Slim X600 notebook 07/10/2009 15:00:00

It may be a slimline laptop, but the MSI X-Slim X600 definitely isn’t small. It has a 15.6in wide screen display that’s perfect for office work, watching videos and browsing the Web; and it has enough CPU power to run almost any application.

    HP Pavilion dv2-1132AX notebook 02/10/2009 15:10:00

The HP Pavilion dv2-1132AX is one of the new breed of slim laptops to hit the Australian market. It aims to be very portable, affordable and reasonably powerful -- and it hits the mark in all three areas. This 12.1in notebook costs $1299 and is perfect for users who want something bigger and more powerful than a netbook but more portable than a 15in laptop.

    Lenovo IdeaCentre C300 30/09/2009 04:39:00

The IdeaCentre C300 is part of Lenovo's value budget desktop segment. It does its bit to look elegant with a floral design imprinted on its front speakers - arrayed along the length of its bottom screen bezel. However, what caught our eye most was its new Dual Core Atom C330 and an ATI HD4530 discrete graphics.

Windows 7 hardware: touch finally arrives 30/09/2009 02:04:00

Before Windows 7's arrival, touchscreen support wasn't part of the Windows operating system itself. Instead, all-in-one PC vendors resorted to stopgaps ranging from elegant (HP's growing TouchSmart software suite) to kludgy (touchscreen apps from MSI and Asus).

    Samsung NC10 netbook 24/09/2009 09:27:00

A standard netbook with a pretty conventional design, Samsung's NC10 won't turn many heads, but its crowning feature is built-in 3G wireless broadband. Partnered with Optus, the Samsung NC10 becomes a handy road-warrior -- if you can live with the tiny touchpad.

AMD, Intel budget chipsets go head to head 17/09/2009 08:54:00

For years, Intel and AMD have been battling for predominance in the processor/chipset market. AMD's latest plan seems to be to push back on economic grounds -- to offer high-value budget chipsets targeted at the soon-to-be-released Windows 7 systems, and high-performance chipsets that are slightly slower, but much cheaper, than equivalent Intel products. And Intel is firing back.
