    TiVo exposed 27/06/2008 14:50:00

For the last decade, TiVo has been the de-facto standard for personal video recorders in the US. At its core, it records digital TV broadcasts and saves them for later viewing, just like any regular PVR. What made TiVo stand out from the crowd of other PVRs was its ability to suggest -- and automatically record -- shows that were similar to the ones that the user had already flagged. This functionality is set to be unleashed on the Australian market when the TiVo service and accompanying set-top box are released in early July.

Beyonwiz's latest PVR, the DP-H1, delivers an interesting twist to the traditional design. Without an included hard drive, the H1 relies on USB hard drives to record to. Like beyonwiz's other units, the H1 includes media streaming and digital reception, and its USB-based nature gives it an added layer of flexibility that will appeal to many users.

Recording on the DP-P1 is a simple and well integrated affair. While it lacks a few of the features that full-blown PVRs may sport, such as one-touch recording, it's nevertheless a highly functional and efficient recording device. The time-shift buffer is effective and intuitive, making pausing or rewinding live TV quick and easy. One-touch recording isn't available, although two quick taps of the recording button will achieve the same results. It also lacks customisable recording modes, although its 200GB hard drive should provide a large enough buffer to account for this.

    Beyonwiz DP-S1 18/05/2007 15:53:28

When it comes to convergent PVR technology, the Australian market has lagged behind the US market, where devices such as the TiVo and, more recently, Vudu offer convenient ways of recording and playing back TV shows. The Australian market may finally be catching up, however, if Beyonwiz's DP-S1 is any indication. It's an all-in-one device that boasts a DVD player, PVR functionality, media streaming from PCs via wired and wireless networks, support for USB and memory cards, a full array of digital outputs, and twin HD tuners.
