Digital video allows PC users to produce high-quality movies with ease. But what about all that archived analog video that you shot on 8mm or VHS tape, or even 8mm film reels?

Four Japanese electronics companies are planning to publish detailed specifications for a consumer high-definition digital video format in October, they said Tuesday.

In the video editing industry, the term ‘real-time’ refers to the ability to perform a task — such as creating a special effect or a 3D title — in the time it takes to play the piece of video footage. Unfortunately, companies often redefine the word to suit their product, making it difficult to compare features from one product to another.
