It's hard to imagine life before the BlackBerry. Well, maybe that's exaggerating. But it's certainly true we depend on pocket-sized devices that fulfil the vast bulk of our communication and contacts needs.

PalmOne's LifeDrive has put almost everything you'd want from a notebook - document editing, e-mail access, and plenty of storage - into a package not much larger than a typical early MP3 player.

Personal digital assistant (PDA) manufacturers endured yet another quarter of falling shipments, according to IDC, but some vendors are still coming up with new ideas as the more established companies embrace newer converged devices that add voice and data capabilities to traditional PDAs.

Mobile phone manufacturer LG Electronics has agreed to use a version of the Palm OS designed by Palmsource in a future smart phone, which might be the first phone to use a Linux-based version of Palm OS that is under development.

Hewlett-Packard chief executive officer Mark Hurd has begun to shake things up at his new company. On Monday the company announced that it had split its recently merged printer and personal computer groups into two separate divisions, undoing one of the last major decisions made by Hurd's predecessor, Carly Fiorina.
