As a longtime user of Corel's Paint Shop Pro, I had high hopes for Digital Studio 2010.

    SilverFast SE 11/09/2009 09:40:00

Every scanner comes with software. That software allows the scanner to communicate with your computer, so you can scan your photos and documents, save them on your hard drive, e-mail or print them, and otherwise use them in your normal digital workflow. So, why should you consider spending more money to purchase SilverFast SE (US$49, free demo that adds watermarks) to replace your scanner's own software? Because it may possibly make the difference between okay scans and great ones.

    HP Mini 5101 netbook 17/08/2009 15:30:00

When is a netbook so good that it feels like you’re using a regular laptop? Pretty much never, but the HP Mini 5101 feels as close to a real notebook as you'll get with a netbook, and we think it's a brilliant product. It's built out of metal and is very stylish, with a beautiful keyboard and a latchless, high resolution 10.1in screen. Its specifications mean that unless you’ve got a multitude of programs open at the same time, it doesn’t feel like it’s running an Intel Atom CPU.

    HP Mini 5101 31/07/2009 17:40:00

HP pioneered the notion of transforming a netbook into a corporate raider. The idea seems like a budget-conscious no-brainer now, but 18 months ago the HP 2133 Mini-Note was a wolf pack of one. Since then, the netbook market has evolved - and so have HP's entries in it. The HP Mini 5101 is a smart update, with slickly styled lines, a batch of business-ready apps, and finally a serviceable touchpad.

    How to create a high-key photo 14/07/2009 05:00:00

Ever wonder how photographers get the amazing results you see in professional portraits and glamour shots? Well, to be blunt, they cheat. No one ever said that photography had to accurately reflect reality; photographers commonly tweak lighting, color, saturation, and other factors to get the look they're after.

Photography is an art, but there's something stirring about natural media, such as watercolour, oil painting or charcoal line drawing.

Edit your photos online for free 19/05/2009 05:05:00

Looking for a photo editor? The usual choices include Adobe Photoshop Elements (available online for about $US85 and up), which I use to demonstrate techniques here in Digital Focus, and Corel Paint Shop Pro (available for about $US70 and up). There are free options as well, like Paint.Net and GIMP. For serious RAW shooters, I recommend Adobe Lightroom (available for about $US220 and up).

    Corel Painter 11 01/05/2009 15:40:00

A worthwhile upgrade overall--and a must if you have a Wacom Intuous or Cintiq tablet and use its virtual pencils, chalk, pastels, and other nonpaint tools to do sketching.
