A prototype device due to be shown in Tokyo Wednesday may give laptop computers a better shot at performing heavy-duty video processing.

An add-in graphics card based on Toshiba's SpursEngine chip will be launched in late November by Leadtek.

October began, as it always does, with Japan's biggest electronics show: Ceatec. The show attracted a little over 196,000 visitors who got a chance to see the best of the Japanese electronics industry, including some exciting new prototypes of devices that are still some way from hitting the market.

Toshiba has taken the final step towards launch of a high-performance chip derived from the powerful Cell processor that powers Sony's PlayStation 3 games console.

Leadtek's new mid-range graphics card is based on NVIDIA's 7600GT processor, which has a clock speed of 560MHz, a memory speed of 1.4GHz and it can process 12 pixels per clock cycle.
