Microsoft last month made Windows Vista Beta 2 publicly available for download or delivery on DVD via its Windows Vista Consumer Preview Program (CPP). The CPP closed to new registrations on June 30, and it appears Microsoft will not reopen it when Vista Release Candidate 1 arrives, but all registered CPP users will be offered RC1 as well.

Everybody knows you should back up the important data on your PC often. In fact, if I stacked up all the issues of PC World magazine that recommend this important task at least once, the pile would eventually collapse--trapping the smaller members of our staff underneath.

Symantec has updated its Norton Ghost image backup program, and the new version reflects technology in Drive Image from PowerQuest, the former rival Symantec acquired last year.

Most PC systems are vulnerable to problems such as data loss via viruses, corrupt software or hard disk failure. Unless PC users have a regime of regular backups, problems could arise.

Symantec Corp. Tuesday announced plans to acquire storage management vendor PowerQuest Corp. to help bolster its server and desktop management software.
