The screen uses an IPS panel (In-plane Switching) that can display colours better than most others, including Dell’s older 27-inch model the U2709W. In keeping with the current trend, the Dell UltraSharp U2711 features a 16:9 wide-screen aspect ratio for movies, but the big deal here is its screen resolution.

With everyone watching their budget at the moment, including creative professionals who need a high-quality screen, the arrival of the Eizo FlexScan S2242W is timely.

HP calls the 24in DreamColor LP2480zx 'uniquely affordable'. At over $4000, most of us probably don't think that at all. However, professional users who make their living using colour-critical applications might well see the merit in that statement. That's because it's not a typical monitor at all: it's a high-end model that's capable of producing more colours than your eyes will probably ever see.

The picture quality from this 22in screen is sublime and the primary reason for that is its wide colour gamut, which is said to encompass up to 92 per cent of the Adobe RGB colour space. What this means is that it's not your everyday monitor, but is instead aimed at photographers and anyone else who works with digital images that will be published.

If graphics or video are serious business to you, then you'll need a monitor that's faultless in its execution. You'll also need a fat wallet with a lot of green notes in it, as it costs a lot to look good, and in that respect, Eizo's latest ColorEdge screen is one of the best for colour reproduction. It's strictly for colour-critical work, so only professional photographers, layout artists and graphic designers, as well as video producers, need apply.
