Android gaming has finally arrived 21/03/2011 01:58:00

Mark our words: 2011 is the year for Android gaming. Two years ago, the iPhone was effectively the only phone that supported serious gaming -- unless you consider Brickbreaker on the BlackBerry to be the ultimate gaming experience. Last spring, Google proved that it was serious about gaming when it hired games industry veteran Mark DeLoura to act as its "Developer Advocate" for games. But gaming developers seemed a bit hesitant to climb on board with the platform. When we surveyed the games available in the Android Market, we found a lot of sad rip-offs of popular iPhone games, plagued by shoddy graphics and buggy game play. There wasn't even a games section in the Market!

Augmented reality: pure hype or next big thing in mobile? 27/01/2010 06:40:00

Augmented reality technology is getting a lot of attention these days -- particularly the use of AR with smartphones. The idea is that by using certain software, you can turn your iPhone, Droid or other smartphone into a virtual heads-up display. Aim your phone's camera at a shop, restaurant or landmark, and information about the place, such as hours of operation, reviews or directions, appears on the device's screen as graphics floating over the image of the place.

AMD bails out IT 17/11/2008 10:46:00

There's a good deal that's special about AMD's new Shanghai server CPU. It's fabulous science, fun for those of us who get dewy-eyed over the prospect of a 25 percent faster world switch time and immersion lithography. It makes the x86 battle interesting again because it carries AMD into territory that it must fight hard to win--the two-socket (2P) server space--and where innovation is sorely needed. AMD beat Intel's next-generation server architecture to market while closing performance, price, and power efficiency gaps between Core 2 and Shanghai. Just as it did in the old days, AMD now claims that its best outruns Intel's best despite having a lower clock speed.

    Acrobat 9 Pro Extended 28/07/2008 14:50:00

Acrobat 9 Pro Extended is the king of Adobe's document-creation suites. It provides a wealth of advanced tools and features geared towards user interaction and the seamless integration of multimedia, including Flash video. At $995, it is more than twice the price of the standard Acrobat 9 edition, which is a pretty drastic mark-up in anyone's book. Fortunately, after a few hours of hands-on experience, it swiftly becomes evident that the improvements are worth the extra busload of pennies -- especially for businesses that want to stay ahead of the curve.

For consumers still living with a standard-definition television, DVD-quality video is generally accepted as good enough. For the latest whiz-bang high-definition plasma, Blu-ray or HD-DVD is optimal. But what does the future hold?
