CNC Lathe and CNC Machining Centre
We will install a new computer in the office for CAD and CAM software and want to network it via ethernet cable to the CNC lathe and CNC Machining Centre in the workshop - 15-20 metres.
The CNC machines will probably be working at the same time however the design work will probably be done at separate times.
Do we need a switch for the two cables or do we just connect each one as needed? Will the machines show on the computer the same as computers do on a home network?
If you have simple instructions that would be very good please.

Re: CNC Lathe and CNC Machining Centre
You can connect 2 pc's directly with a crossover cable. These can be made up in required lengths at most pc shops. Dick Smith for example should be able to do it. You will need to set ip addresses, say 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2. If you want to have internet access also, it gets a bit more complicated, in this case you could use a usb modem and share the connection from one pc, or use a multi port modem router and set up a standard network. In this case you won't need a crossover, just normal cat5 network cables. Post back for more detail if needed.

Hello there Carol, wondering how you got on with your comms to/from PC to CNC machinery. I had to make a Kerrny & Trekker horizontal mill talk with a PC to transfer instructions and latter make a Japanese machine do the same. The Kerny & Trekker had a paper punch set-up originally, but it did use the rs232 protocol. If you have not got around this problem yet, drop me a line.
