nintendo dsi

is this worth the money and is it that much better than the previous DS?

The nintendo dsi screens are larger. The device is slightly thinner too.

I wouldn't worry about

I wouldn't worry about replacing your old DS, but if you don't already own one, spend the extra money and get the DSi.

The DSi is slightly better.

The DSi is slightly better. I'm not sure what the current prices are like but if your old one is working well there probably isn't a need to upgrade.
