What games can be played on Playstation 3?

Hello!
I was thinking of buying a

PS3 for my sone. Since different brands can be played on the

Wii, is the same true with playstation 3? Can playstation 2 games be played on

playstation 3?

Some of the earlier revisions

Some of the earlier revisions of the 80gb PS3 were capable of running software emulation for PS2 games.

Unfortunately, its never arrived in Australia.
Sony have stopped supporting PS2 compatibility a while ago in an effort to cut prices to compete with the Wii and the crapbox 360.

Unless you want to trawl through ebay and find an old console from overseas, backward compatibility can be forgotten for the PS3.

The PS3 has also lost a few other features such as card readers and USB slots.
