How does your broadband speed stack up?

Hi all,

Us good folk here at PCW/GGG just received a new wireless Broadband Internet card from 3 Mobile, to use while we're on the road at launches and events.

Using our Broadband speed test, here are our results in kbps (we ran the test three times):

1: 673 download, 340 upload
2: 639 download, 333 upload
3: 631 download, 338 upload

Advertised speeds on 3's site are up to 3.6Mbps download but typical speeds of between 600kbps and 1.5Mbps. Upload speeds are rated at up to 384kbps.

How does your broadband speed stack up to these results? Are you sick of advertised and "theoretical" speeds differing greatly to real life results? Does your broadband lag behind? Do you long for better broadband speeds?

Tell us what you think!

For basic web browsing and

For basic web browsing and checking email, those mobile speeds are adequate. However, you would want a lot more if you were using some remote access software (gotomypc, logmein or even Lotus Notes web-based client!).

I haven't got a mobile card, but my iiNet ADSL2+ connection gets me 14632Kbps down and 710Kbps up. That's with a Linksys WAG160N ADSL2+ router.

PCWorld Broadband Speeds

For comparison's sake, here are the speeds we get at PCWorld's offices:

Download: 847Kbps
Upload: 756Kbps

This was done early in the morning so the network wasn't saturated. Faster speeds would always be nicer, but it gets us through :)

Kbps vs kbps

Are you converting the bits (eight bits to the byte) to bytes and reporting this as kilo bytes?

No this is Kilobits (KBps is Kilobytes per second whereas Kbps is kilobits per second). Again, not the fastest speeds, but we get by.

Also it's possible that being in an office environment, speeds are regulated per user - you'd have to ask to find out though!

As a comparison point, my test on the same connection returns results of 960Kbps download and 1046Kbps upload.

Our auxiliary ADSL2+ workplace connection, though, gets speeds of 10928Kbps down and 814Kbps up.

Usually in speed tests, it is

Usually in speed tests, it is specified in Kilo Bits Per Second (Kbps), whilst talking about capacity, Kilo Bytes Per Second (KBps) is used.

broadband speed test result

I am connected to Bigpond cable extreme. Ran the test three times using the Google Chrome browser and results are as follows (kbps)
1. 46649 / 1109
2. 62855 / 1028
3. 50597 / 1116

I would be very happy if these results are true!

I'd love to see if these results are replicated in different browsers. If you can stand the pain, give it a go in Internet Explorer and see if there's a big difference.

Broadband speed

Just tested my Bigpond Cable and received the following results:

1. 9421 114
2. 9383 122
3. 9537 113

There is a desktop and a laptop connected to the modem and the test was done on the desktop.

Unwired Tested :(

Inspite of being on the 10mbs plan I have just ran the test and downloads are in the <500 kbs and up loads ... lets just say its a miracle we got any result. The first time I ran the test I did not even realise the speedo showed the speed as the test ran ... I thouht it was decorative :( Total pity because I love the portability of unwired. Tests were conducted from redfern - on the edge of Sydney CBD.

Disappointed with Unwired

I had Unwired for a while and the speeds really were rubbish, no matter where I was.
The connectivity and range was also pathetic. You would have to bluetac the modem onto an Unwired tower to get a decent signal let alone anywhere near the claimed speeds.

One time, my Unwired modem failed and the rechargeable battery feature was removed from the replacement modem. This meant you couldn't take it anywhere without a power socket close by.

Why anyone would use Unwired is beyond me, because you really get phenomenally better connectivity and speeds with 3G / HDPS wireless broadband, which you can take anywhere and is now quite cheap. No need for a chunky modem and power socket.

Unwired...Very much yesterday's technology.

How does your broadband speed stack up?

Out here in the country I have Optus satellite - supposed to be 512 down and 256 up.
This is a recent test result -
Data: 600 KB
Test Time: 9.97 secs

Your line speed is 490 kbps (0.49 Mbps).
Your download speed is 61 KB/s (0.06 MB/s).

I'm not sure if I am getting close to what I am paying for or not.

Broadband Speeds

My ISP provider advertised the connection as 512KBPS for downloading and 256KBPS for uploading but in reality it is 440KBPS for downloading and a mere 97KBPS for uploading.

Internet speed ripoff

I am connected to adsl at 1.5 m bits and am paying for it AU$ 59.95 P/moth but download is around 745 m bits. I recon that if one buys kilo of meat then charge should be for that kilo of meat and not that of gold. How much money that much music. What a fraudulent rip off. There should be law against IP companies which are charging for services which do not deliver bandwidth speeds as advertised but still charging customers as if they are.

3G performance for various carriers in metro Perth WA

I've just done some more tests comparing my three SIM cards, Vodafone, Telstra and Optus. Telstra seems to have the worst results of the lot, where I am testing here in Perth WA.

After doing 10 tests on each SIM on my Sierra Wireless 881u HSPA (HSDPA/HSUPA) USB modem, my average results are below for each carrier:

Vodafone: D:5120Kbps U:1540Kbps
Optus: D:3110Kbps U:990Kbps
Telstra: D:1130Kbps U:1220Kbps

Telstra NextG seem to have some serious bandwidth issues here in Perth metro area. This could be due to congestion, old/bad infrastructure, or Telstra limiting the available bandwidth.

Signal strength for all tests on all SIM's were on minimum 4 bars, the majority of the time was with a full 5 bars according the the Sierra Wireless Watcher modem software.

My setup that I used for this testing is:
Acer Aspire One netbook
Internet Explorer 8
Sierra Wireless 881U HSPA/3G modem

Vodafone 3G/HSPA

Using your nifty broadband speed test, using my Vodafone 3G SIM with my Sierra 881u HSPA modem, I managed to get decent speeds. Have tried the test a few times and put my highest and lowest speed results.
Highest D5320Kbps/U1484Kbps
Lowest D3503Kbps/U1331Kbps

I seem to get better speeds using my Vodafone SIM compared to using the same setup with my NextG SIM.

Three 3G

I find I get much better speeds on average with 3 Mobile than with Optus' 3G network. What modems are you using for both?

Speed is relative

To get speed test is deceiving. Real life speed depends on the server serving the data to you as well as the actual phone line or cable capacity. Tent there is the DSLAM at your exchange. How many people are hooked up at any given time makes huge difference also. After all all the speed has to pass though a computer, which regulates all connection. And there is the cable capacity across the ocean floor. Large number of factors influence the real speed of internet. In ideal world we all have fibre optic to the door and we will have good speed of around 100MB/s. Until then we can only dream.
