Maxtor OneTouch II loses its touch
I have a Maxtor OneTouch II 300GB external harddrive that I have been using for system back-ups. I have another Seagate HDD in a generic enclosure that I use for media files.
Recently, my PC has been unable to create a Path to the Maxtor and therefore the device cannot be used. The Seagate HDD is recognised and a Path created but the drive is reported as "Not Formatted".
I have disconnected an external card reader that tends to take-over Paths.
This reader usually tries to grab the four drive/prompt-letters immediately after the internal devices. Because of this, I have assigned drive letters like N: P: Q: to external devices. Now, these Paths are not recognised.
With the exception of my Creative Zip-drive (how quaint, say some :)), the Maxtor is not recognised and the Seagate is alledgedly unformatted.
Sometimes, a USB port will drop into 'sleep' mode. To check on this, I have moved the Maxtor USB connection around to no effect.
To summarise:
The Maxtor is recognised/displayed in:
Safely Remove Hardware - the Properties say "This device is working properly".
Add Hardware Wizard - "The following hardware is already installed on your computer"
Device Manager - twice - 1. as Maxtor Personal Storage and 2. as a connected USB device
It is not recognised/displayed in:
Computer Management > Disk Management
Computer Management > Removable Storage > Media
Computer Management > Removable Storgage > Libraries
Drive Paths
I have screen shots of these if anyone is interested.
Can someone/anyone please offer enlightenment. Either via the forum or to << Yraen.Sydney at Gmail dot com >>
Many thanks.

MaxStor OneTouch has lost its touch
Did you check to see if there is a conflict of the drive letter with a mapped drive? Sometimes this happens and the simplest solution is to assign a new letter to the backup drive that is not conflicting with any mapped drive. Use the Disk Management module in Computer Administration in Administrative Tools in the Control Panel. Sometimes, if you have too many drive letter mappings, Windows gets confused.
I have a couple of Maxtor 1Tb
I have a couple of Maxtor 1Tb external USB drives and they "go to sleep" frequently. I emailed Maxtor about this "problem" and the reply I got was "the drive/s are "Green" drives designed to go into standby mode when not being accessed for a determined amount of time in order to save power !"
Trouble is, if I'm watching a movie which is on one of the drives and I pause the movie to do something, when I come back and hit Resume the movie crashes because the drive's gone to sleep on me ! Damned irritating to say the least.
maxtor one touch II
I got rid of mine - it sapped way too much from my memory and slowed things down and only worked when and if it wanted to. I also use Seagate internally and find that's all I need. Maxtor had no idea what to do or when to do it - assuming I could tell it to back up in the first place and then it didn't back up everything - only a very small portion of what I had it set up to perform. I constantly reset the settings to no avail so I ditched it and my pc is well again and doing what it is supposed to do. Sorry I'm no help but just thought you might want to know.
One Touch drive goeo to sleep
I use Acronis True Image Backup and Restore for my One Touch. I plan my backup schedule and run backups manually at a time that I don't need to use the computer. It can also be set to run automatically. That eliminates RAM problems. I think there is a small program that can send a "stay awake" message to the external drive when you pause running a movie. I can't remember where I saw the discussion on the concept, but that should solve your movie crashing from a long pause.
I have a one touch 500gb that
I have a one touch 500gb that does the same thing. its a real pain in the ass, I was able to get my data back using some partition recovery software.
One thing I have learnt about this disk, is never have it plugged in while you boot, this can trash it, always plug it in once the system has stabilised, and never disconnect with out eject usb device, it has been working ok for about 8 months once I learned these rules.
The 3rd rule is dont buy another of these pieces of rubbish.
