Transfering data from a SATA HDD to a UDMA HDD (2 posts)

If tryin to transfer data from one hard drive to another, can it be done if the new hard drive is SATA and the other is the older version UDMA, by way of putting them in the same PC and making the older one a slave?

Or do i have to use some other way such as a DCC (direct connection cable)? If this is more appropiate how do i get both PCs to recognise the connection if using a USB cable? Is this possible to do by using just one monitor?

The older PC is Windows 98 second edition and the new PC is Windows XP Home, i know that both the Win98SE HDD and the WIN XP Home HDD are FAT32 formatted.

If SATA is running and accessible, slaving the other drive in on an ide channel will be no problem. Note that SATA drives are all master - no jumpers, one drive per cable. Your IDE should be set as master if it is alone on the channel. Some boards will not recognize a single drive set as slave.
