3D Games lockup (9 posts)

Having just replaced my Asus V7100T (32mb) with a GForceIIPro 64mb, I thought I would solve a problem with all 3D Games. It doesn't seem to matter which game I run, even those as old as Quake2, or as recent as Steet Soldiers, anywhere from five seconds to ten minutes into the game, the whole screen locks up.

Sound is unaffected, the hard drives and fans are still spinning. Have fdisked & formatted the c: drive many, many times but still no luck. Have downloaded all the latest patches, video drivers, sound drivers.

Have disabled find fast, acpi function in bios, still no luck. Reenabled all performance defaults in bios, still no luck. Only programs running in background are explorer and systray. CPU is 700mhz Athlon, mobo is MS6330, Ram is 384mb of PC133, Soundcard is Live!

Value running Liveware 3.0. Mobo reports CPU at 45C. Could it be something as simple as faulty Ram? With all the cheap ram about at the moment, is this something I should check?

verything else works perfectly, including graphics work, and office apps. PC is standalone, no net connection, no viruses (Nortons 2001 AV, latest updates).

I repair computers in my spare time, so know the usual caveats in setting up things, but this one's got me stumped, unless it is just the ram.

Re: 3D Games lockup

I would check the motherboard manufacturers site for a BIOS upgrade, and if you are using a motherboard with a Via chipset I would be downloading the latest 4in1 drivers.

Re: 3D Games lockup

Odds on you have OpenGL problem.

I would be looking at your AGP drivers (motherboard chipset, not video card), and the AGP multiplier you use.

Re: 3D Games lockup

It could be RAM. Try one of the memory leak test programmes to check. I had a similar problem which turned out to be something to do with my TBeach soundcard, which I was unable to resolve. So I went back to the onboard sound on my via agp 133 moboard. My problem only occured with an AGP graphics card (tnt2 and then a geforce 2),everything was fine with an old pci banshee.

It might be worth checking in the bios to make sure any onboard sound is disabled. Also check the agp aperture size is not set to a ridiculously large value (try 64Mb). Also did you uninstall the old card drivers before installing the new ones (sound and graphics?

You could also try setting the bios to the default values. One more thing to try is to disable your sound card in system properties and see if this makes a difference ,it did with my problem so out came the TBeach card.

Hope this helps as freeze problems can be a real mongrel to solve. Alistair

Re: 3D Games lockup

I'd get rid of Nortons AV first, then maybe swap the ram around, or take one or two out. I've also heard of conflicts with SB live cards with certain hardware.

Re: 3D Games lockup

Hi, Ive had the same problems with my computer. I had no idea what mobo I had but Looking through system info I found it. Apparently, GeForce cards have an undocumented conflict. This can be fixed by downloading and installing the latest 4-in-1 drivers(4.33) from www.viatech.com. If u dont have a via chipset obviously dont use this fix but it really helped me. Im freeze free now. It took me about 1 1/2 years of scouring the net for clues to find this fix.

Hope it helps

Re: 3D Games lockup

And the winner's prize goes to Nick O and Buck Rogers!!

Having already installed a previous BIOS update, I checked for a newer one, grabbed that and the latest 4in1 drivers, ran both, and lo and behold, I am now freeze-free.

THANKS GUYS!!

Re: 3D Games lockup

Most likely, in your case, a memory leak problem.

Re: 3D Games lockup

Those Via 4 in 1 drivers fixed that same problem for me! Hooray for www.viatech.com!
