Optical Drive operating on its own (3 posts)

Any idea why the optical drives (Dvd Rewritable) start opening and closing all on their own? About every 20 seconds the drive drawer opens, then closes and spins up to operating speed, stops and then opens again. Yes, I have three computers connected to a wireless LAN and yes all three computers have done it from time to time. Yes, I have Nortons 360 installed on all three and do weekly scans. One temporary solution is to Uninstall the Dvd drive and then Restart the computer which fixes it for a while. Any ideas, Malware perhaps? Cheers, Rod

Could be software running in the background

Minimise the chances of it being any software that starts up automatically with Windows and runs in the background. Go to Start-Run, type in msconfig, go to the start up tab and uncheck all the boxes.

If it still occurs, run Windows task manager (press control-alt-delete to get to it) and find out what's running on your computer. I've read that Creative software can sometimes cause this problem, so if you have any Creative software installed on your systems, maybe kill the process and see if that stops the opening.

But yes, make sure you don't have any viruses/malware, so update your Nortons.

Hope this helps.
