Unable to format 2nd hard drive (6 posts)

I followed the basics for installing a second hard dive. However when trying to format this drive using the wizard, I got the message 'the format did not complete successfully'.

Note, I have a dell 4500 series which runs Windows XP home edition. I am seeing the drive in my bios as primary slave drive. PLEASE HELP!!

Re: Unable to format 2nd hard drive

Does the drive show up in Programs/Administrative Tools /Computer Management/Disk Management? If it does then you should delete the partition, reboot and repartition the hard disk. Post back with details if this doesn't work.

Cheers

Re: Unable to format 2nd hard drive

Check that you are not trying to change any of the format settings, so therefore if you are formatting make sure it is an 'unconditional' format.

If this doesn't work, you may wish to fdisk the drive (partition manager) - however is using fdisk we recommend using it from a boot disk and disconnect all other HDD's from the system, this will ensure you do not wipe the wrong drive.

If neither of these work, you may look to return the HDD to your place of purchase.

You can also go to the vendors website (ie Seagate, WD) and they will also have wizard software to setup the drive.

Hope this helps.
