Is there to somewhere to tick in Outlook express to force a recipient of email to acknowledge that the email has been recieved. Have searched high and low, but cannot find such a facility, however am quite sure it is there.

Alind, there is are two ways in OE to request a read receipt:
A. For every email you send:
1. Go to TOOLS > OPTIONS
2. Click the RECEIPTS tab
3. Check the REQUEST A READ RECEIPT FOR ALL SENT MESSAGES box
B. When sending individual emails
1. With the "compose" window open
2. Go to TOOLS > REQUEST READ RECEIPT
This works whether you're sending a new email, replying to a received email, or forwarding a received email.
If your version of OE doesn't have these options, I suggest upgrading to OE5 (I'm not sure whether older versions had this facility).
