Proxy settings (5 posts)

How can I determine the proxy settings for my Sygate firewall?

- an IM program has asked for it.

Re: Proxy settings

Ask your ISP or do a Google search.

Re: Proxy settings

Joe,

That depends if you are on dial-up or broadband.

If dial-up, was it an IM install on your PC that asked for it?

If Yes, then ok. Go to Internet Settings and you should find your default proxy details in there.

If No, (that is, someone else's IM is asking) then tell 'em to get stood on.

The latter answer similarly applies to anyone asking for your broadband settings. For broadband you shouldn't need proxy settings.

Exercise some care here: you may be opening your machine to hacking.

Cheers, Yraen.

Re: Proxy settings

Yes, Yahoo! Messenger suggested I could insert the proxy setting for my firewall. But Yahoo works anyway. Still, since the question was raised, I thought I'd pursue it. Yes, I am on dial-up (but am considering changing to an only slightly more expensive Broadband). I have formed the view that proxy settings may not be relevant for a stand-alone PC - would that be right ?

Re: Proxy settings

Joe,

It is your dial-up ISP that primarliy decides whether you need a proxy setting. Live with it until you get your broadband connection set up.

Cheers, Yraen
