Moochy Users (4 posts)

I have a Wi-fi connection. It is always troubling me because the guys next door are mooching off on my Internet connection. I have also tried using NetStmbler to fix holes in the connection. How am I going to secure it if I already have WPA-PSK enabled? Any help would be appreciated.

Specs: Netgear DG834G ADSL2+ modem.

I assume that you have the router set as an access point and not as peer to peer. You should not have any problems keeping anyone out but here are a couple of other things that you can do.

1. Set the router so that it is not visible. (do not broadcast SSID) 2. Set up the access list so that the router will only accept your mac address.

By the way, how do you know they are using your connection?

One thing you could do is change your encryption key every couple of weeks. I agree with the last post, make sure it dosen't broadcast and mac filtering will help as well. Make sure your encryption key is hard to crack. I don't get this problem as my nearest neighbour is over 1km away.

Good luck

Good question I would like to know the same!

Ideally a few months ago, my internet was running sluggish (on dialup at that stage), and I thought it was strange because I was the only one the computer & internet at that stage. As we had ICS running, any PC could just jump on as the other one was online. But today as all the other PC's in our house were off. So I turned on the logs on my netgear access points (logs all wireless card mac addresses) then wrote down all my mac addresses (3 laptops), then shortly after discovered 2 wireless MAC addresses that were not mine.

So I wasted no time at all in turning on the encryption. Unforutnatley I only have a 11b netgear wireless router, so it only supports up to 128-bit encryption, and turned that on, and then the internet went back up to speed.

Recently I just returned home from work in Papua New Guinea, and too my discuss there are over 8 wireless networks running around in our lounge here, so wifi is defiently becoming very popular. Funny thing is no-one else's wifi network is encrypted!

Regards, Michael
