Zone Alarm popup that won't go away (13 posts)

I have Zone Alarm free and I have just been hit with a popup from Zone Alarm advertising a new product. I can stand a popup from ZA as it's such a good product but this popup won't go away unless you agree to a trial or a deferred agreement to trial. You can't say no. Who else has had this? I checked the ZA forums and a few people in the US have complained of the same thing.

Hmm. Well if it ever happens to me, that will be the end of ZA. Are you running XP? SP2 includes firewall. Adequate for most.

Who can't say no? Tried ZA, nothing but problems, didn't take me long to uninstall and switch to Sygate Personal Firewall, also free. So much happier that I did.

Re: Zone Alarm popup that won't go away

Remove Zone Alarm and get the Sygate Personal Firewall which is free.

Re: Zone Alarm popup that won't go away

This is just a guess as I use ZA free also, but it could be the notice of an update for ZA.

Re: Zone Alarm popup that won't go away

More on my story of ZA.

It was an ad for a new product. Which one it was escapes me as it was lost in my disgust at being confronted with a popup to which I could not say and this from a company that makes a living out of stopping this crap. I have not uninstalled ZA yet. I am still considering it but in the interim I have blocked its ability to access the internet by its own firewall tables. I was considering getting ZA Pro but that is now gone.

I just checked and there are now about 30 responses in the ZA forums thread, all unhappy campers at being hit by this. The web site for the ZA forum thread is http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/board/message?board.id=win_za_msgs&message.id=10954#M10954

Re: Zone Alarm popup that won't go away

Interesting problem. I've been using ZA for a long time and never had any problem like this.

It sounds like spyware, which of course Zone Labs would not want to put in their software if it will alienate users away from their products - that would be commercial suicide. I assume it does not appear if ZA is shut down?

ZA is a good product in my experience, so it might be worth removing it, then get a fresh download from Zone Labs website and see if that too is infected.

I recently got an update for ZA - if this phenomenon was going to hit me it would have most likely come through at that time, which makes me think it is external spyware either infecting ZA or disguising itself as a ZA feature. If not everyone gets it (and I don't) then it's likely to be separate spyware and not part of ZA. The only pop-ups that occur in ZA should be threat alerts, and you can turn them off in the main console under "Alerts & Logs".

If it's mentioned in the ZA discussion forums, has Zone Labs responded to those concerns, and have you or anyone else emailed Zone Labs to ask them what is going on? I would.

I recently tried Trend Micro Antispyware (free trial) which found a couple of bugs that AdAware and Spybot didn't find. Give that a go.

Paul.

The pop-up/nag screen only effects the free basic version of ZA . It is not a virus,, (unless you count it as a built in virus of ZA) It promps users to buy a full version. There is no way to disable it. It is built into the Zone Alarm application , and does not register as a separate process.

I think that ANYONE that screws up our internet should get at least 5 years in JAIL.

Computers are hard enough to use for the average person. We don't need idiots infecting them.
