auto shutdown no longer works (6 posts)

Auto shutdown no longer works. Anyone know what I can do?

Re: auto shutdown no longer works

Two possible reasons - first one, installed program cannot find the hardware for which it was installed and second - an internet connection is still open or still trying to connect to your ISP.

Re: auto shutdown no longer works

Hi

If it is a standard application windows will shut it off after two mnis. If it is a dial up connection or a usb device windows will not have control to terminate it. If Shutdown is just not working at all, then there maybe a problem with lsass.exe its process or your power supply is going.

best of luck taner

Dear Ken,

If all of the suggestions given to you prove fruitless, and you HAVE to reinstall Windows 2K, BEFORE you do that, check out my Windows XP post to Ewoud. The basic info in it is applicable to both OS's: If you ever have to do a reinstall again in the future, it will be a 10 MINUTE interruption and not a 4 DAY project!

BUT, skip the part about Drive Image, as it has been dis-continued. Stick with Ghost 2003.

Also, there are three things I forgot to put in that Post:

1. If your computer is one massive C: Drive, you are courting disaster. Get yourself a disk partitioning program such as Partition Magic to keep your C: Drive seperate from your data files. As I said in the Post, data files go on ANY drive OTHER than C:

2. Use Partition Magic to make the D: Drive about 7 Gigs and install ALL of your programs (OTHER than MS Service Packs) there, so that your C: Drive is as small as possible. That way, making and restoring a Ghost Image is a MUCH faster operation. If you keep your C: to about 1800 MB's, on high compression, Ghost 2003 will be able to quickly store that Image on a DVD, as well as to any Fat32 or NTFS partition.

3. If 2K has it, shut off your System Restore to make the C: Drive even smaller. See these posts: http://www.helpscreen.com.au/index.php?msgid=536956796&cid=15 http://www.helpscreen.com.au/index.php?cid=15&msgid=891004380

Good luck.

Let the forum know how things worked out for you.

Re: auto shutdown no longer works

If it used to work and now you only get to "it is safe to shut down" and have to press the power button to completely shut down, then it is most likely a setting in the BIOS (Power management) which has been changed.

I hope you know your way around the BIOS, otherwise I would not suggest changing anything but just keep continuing to shut down manually till someone else can re-set the BIOS for you.

regards

Michelle
