unsuccessful load of broadband Bigpond package (5 posts)

I have tried loading a Broadband Bigpond internet package to my PC (Packard Bell) on Windows 98 which did not finish loading prior to a power failure. Now My PC will not start in Windows. It only starts in Safe Mode. I have tried a few fixes but have achieved nothing. Can you please advise any fixes I could try to get Windows up and running, to get back online and to join the Broadband world?

Re: unsuccessful load of broadband Bigpond package

Bigpod Broadband istalls usually fail without the benefit of a power failure. Particularly on W98. If your system can handle it, now would be a great time for a format and switch to XP. Otherwise, the simplest fix would be to install 98 straight over itself. Won't lose data, and should run normally afterwards.

Hi Shane.

Chris has given you a good suggestion, and may I just add to it. It will not help you with your present dilemma but it sure can save you heartache in the future.

If you decide not to upgrade to XP of whatever, scout around and see if you can lay your hands on a copy of "Go Back" I think it is now put out by Norton but stand alone version are still available. Originally I think Roxio put it out.

Go Back is an excellent "roll-back" utility that can be access from Windows and from just after the BIOS boot. So even if Windows goes completely pear shaped, (does Windows ever go pear shaped ?) :-) you can recover/revert back to a fully functioning PC.

Re: unsuccessful load of broadband Bigpond package

I must say I get concerned when the first suggested solution to a problem is to reformat/reload/upgrade - in my experience a working system has accumulated a considerable amount of customisation and little "comforts" that are only appreciated when they are gone!

You don't specify whether you were attempting to load the ADSL or the Cable client, but may I suggest the following:

Boot into safe mode. Go to Control Panel, Add/remove programs and attempt to remove the partially installed client (if it is in the list). Reboot to (hopefully) full Win98, and attempt to install the client again. This might do the trick without the agony of a clean install!
