Modem Sharing (7 posts)

I have networked my desktop (Windows 98SE) and laptop(Windows XP) using a cross-over cable. The computers see each other and I can share folders and the printer. However I can't access the internet from the laptop through the desktop. I am using a Telstra NT1 Plus II USB ISDN modem connected to the desktop.

Can anyone give me any idea where I am going wrong?

Thanks

Re: Modem Sharing

Hi,

I found a good tutorial that explains how to set up ICS on 98. It applies to cable/DSL connections, but hopefully it will help you get the network running on your ISDN connection.

http://www.homenethelp.com/ics/ics-install-net98.asp

I don't have much experience with 98, therefore I can't personally suggest anything.

Hope it helps.

Daniel.

Re: Modem Sharing

I would swap the OS's around. Put XP on the Desktop and Win98SE on the Laptop or get a copy of XP for the Desktop.

IMHO XP does ICS much better than 98SE, there are more options to control what happens and you can set XP to dial up on demand.

I'm not sure but the firewall on XP may also protect thte ICS machines.

Re: Modem Sharing

Thanks guys for your help. I'll try the tutorial first and if all else fails I'll try the second option.

Thanks once again,

Re: Modem Sharing

There is a utility which enables quick internet connection and disconnection in a setup such as yours.

Go to:

Re: Modem Sharing

Hi Peter,

As the two PCs are already talking to each other over the LAN, the network seems to be perfectly ok.

The only thing you need to do as you are using an ISDN connection is enable Internet connection sharing on your desktop.

Goto control panel. Then goto Windows setup. Then click on internet options and click on details. Then check the first option that says enable internet connection sharing. Choose the PPP adapter that you have as the shared in the wizard. Choose the network or the NIC as your Home. Then finish the wizard.

Also remember to check the option that says obtain an IP address automatically in the local area connection properties of your laptop(XP). Then restart the computer.

THe desktop should get an IP of 192.168.0.1 and the laptop should get an IP of 192.168.0.2.

Then just connect to the internet and bot will be on.

Best of Luck and cheers
