In thunderbird the first addressee is the to: addressee. Normally the next addressee would be the cc: addressee. However, in thunderbird each subsequent addressee is the to: addressee. How do I change this.

There is a drop-down menu of possible selections activated by the arrow at the left side of the address line. This includes Cc: and Bcc: in addition to the default To; Just click that drop-down on the second line to choose Cc:
