Networked computers cannot see each other (4 posts)

A while ago, I set up a 2 computer (Windows 98 and Windows XP) network using cat 5e crossover cable. This worked perfectly until a hardware fault occurred, however I assumed it was a software fault at the time and reinstalled the network with the Windows XP NeTwork Setup Wizard.

When I fixed the hardware fault, the network appeared to be connected (by the flashing LEDs on the back of the LAN card and the Windows XP Network connections) however the computers could no longer see each other. I have checked that the subnet masks and the workgroup names are the same on both computers. Any help would be appreciated.

What software fault? Did you reinstall one of the systems? Which one is the master and are you sharing internet or just files?

Hi William,

First of all i would check to make sure you do have connectivity by pinging the other computer (do this from both computers). If this works my next suggestions would be to make sure your firewalls are configured correctly to allow communication between the two computers. Other than this i can only guess that it might be a sharing issue.

Re: Networked computers cannot see each other

Cant connect to computers in your network

1. Click start button

2. Click "My Network Places"

3. Right-click and click on "Properties"

4. Right-click on "Local Area Connection" and click on "Properties"

5. Click on the "Authentication" tab

6. Uncheck "Enable network access control using IEEE 802.1X"

7. Click "OK"

Hopefully that should fix the problem. If it didn't then you have a different problem.
