I want to connect two Lans that are miles apart. Can I do this with a router and an ADSL connection at both ends?
Is it possible to link these two lans without having to go through the internet?
Thanks
John

Re: ADSL networking
2. Microwave or laser link. Costs lots to buy. Requires line of sight.
3. Virtual network by connecting both ends to the internet with broadband or connections so they are permanently connected. Costs will depend on the amount of data transferred.
Re: ADSL networking
If you use Internet Connection Sharing, the sharing of your connection is run by software slowing down things a little bit.
Get a cheap 4 port switch or HUB and get a Netgear Gateway router. Coonect it to the first input. it will have an ip address of 192.168.0.1. Set your tcp/ip protocols on each of your workstation network cards to 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3 respectively (with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.
Under the gateway setting make sure you add the router, 192.168.0.1 and in the dns, enter the adsl service providers dns and you can use your username as the host. After the machines reset, you should be able to connect straight away. This is a very rough guide and all service providers use different settings and may even use configuration scripts, so ask them for these details. They will not teach you how to share the connection however so just ask for all the server settings required.
Hope this helps a little bit. BTW the router should cost abt 300-350 bucks and a cheap hub may cost under 100 or a switch might cost 130-180.
Also need ethernet cards and cables.
