I have been a happy user of W2000 Pro since it came out. I have decided to upgrade to XP Pro with a full version CD.
When I run the XP Setup, I get the message "Windows XP setup does not support upgrading from Windows 2000 Professional to Windows XP Professional. Setup cannot continue."
The XP Pro CD package says that you can upgrade from W2000 Pro and the MS Website says that you can. What has happened? Could one of the numerous W2000 updates be the cause of this?
If so how do I find out which one? (I don't feel lucky enough to uninstall all the automatic updates and I don't want to do a new install of XP Pro and then have to reinstall all my software).

Is the XP install CD you have a "retail" copy or an "OEM" copy.
A retail copy should let you do what you want to do.
An OEM copy is much cheaper, but it doesn't let you do that. It is intended to be used to put XP on a new non-name-brand PC. It doesn't allow you to upgrade a PC to XP. To do that you need an "upgrade" copy. I realise it sounds pointless, because it does let you do a "new install" on a PC that already has another operating system, but Microsoft wouldn't be able to sell any full-price "retail" copies of XP if people could do everything with a much cheaper "OEM" copy.

You cannot upgrade using an OEM disk. This is for a clean installation on a new PC. Forget the 2000 updates, they are not relevant to XP. Clean install is much better, a bit more work, but worth it in the long run. Save all your data first of course. Safest is to buy a new hard drive, replace the old, clean install, then add the old drive as a slave. That way you won't realize later that you forgot to save something important.
