TCP OR NetBEUI (10 posts)

I am trying to setup a network between to computers (both running ME). I tried using TCP/IP protocol but they would not see each other. As soon as I tried NetBEUI protocol they did. My question is can they be setup to run on TCP/IP so I can run Laplink program, which doesn't use NetBEUI, also the internet sharing doesn't seem to work with NetBEUI.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: TCP OR NetBEUI

You can setup both computers to run both TCP/IP and NetBEUI simultaneously. Simply install both protocols at the same time. You will need to configure TCP/IP on both machines before they will communicate over it however. To do this open the Network configuration applet in the Control Panel. Select TCP/IP and configure. You will need to give each machine its own IP address. You should use an address from the 192.168.x.x range as these are reserved for LANs. For example give the machine that has the internet connection the address 192.168.1.1 and the other machine 192.168.1.2. There is not much else you will need to configure in this menu. After this you should be able to setup internet sharing and LapLink using these ip addresses to specify hosts.

Re: TCP OR NetBEUI

Number one get rid of Win ME. Go with Win 98 and use TCP as NetBEUI is not supported for the net. TCP has and always will be the language of the internet because it supports streaming video and all multimedia applications. Also make sure each PC has a name and file sharing is enabled.

Win Me can now be purchased for $20.00 second hand yet Win 95 is still $40.00 what does that tell you. Hope this info has been of some help.

Re: TCP OR NetBEUI

Install TCP/IP and NetBEUI on both machines. TCP/IP is required to share the Internet and to use Laplink. NetBEUI will allow you to see both machines on the network. The network will work with TCP/IP alone, however you would need to allocate an IP address to each machine. This may be an option, but it may cause some issues with ICS (Internet Connection Sharing in Windows) and I understand Laplink will need to have the IP address entered manually.

If ICS doesn't work properly with you (as I have experienced) you will need to look at other options for sharing the internet, ie a proxy server, which may require you to allocate IP addresses on your network. Anologx proxy is free and it works well.

Re: TCP OR NetBEUI

Hi

I use Windows Me and don't have a problem at all networking. I use a small prog called AnalogX Proxy on the host PC. Then in the ControlPanel/Network/TCP/IP ethernet adapter properties, Click on the IP address Tab. I just put in 192.168.0.1 where it says specify and IP address on the host PC and 192.168.0.2 on the other PC with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

On the Internet Options/ Connections/Lan setting, insert 192.168.0.1 Port 6588 on the Host PC. Basically that's it. I don't have Netbeui or any others only TCP/IP.

AnalogXProxy can be obtain from www.analogx.com for free.

Re: TCP OR NetBEUI

Gene,

I would not use TCP/IP for my local network for security reasons. I would try the suggestion made earlier about using both TCP/IP and NetBEUI - TCP/IP for the internet, and NetBEUI for your local network. A previous comment said that NetBEUI was not made for the internet, which is precisely the reason you use it for your local network, because then it can't be seen from the internet.

On all machines you need to make sure that TCP/IP is unbound from all connections to your local network devices - network card and file and printer sharing. The three devices in Network Properties (Dialup Adapter, Internet Connection Sharing and Network Card Adapter) have all their bindings ticked, but the only TCP/IP bindings that should be ticked are the ones on the TCP/IP->Internet Connection Sharing protocol. It's best that the TCP/IP(Home)->Network Card Adapter and the TCP/IP(Shared)->Dialup Adapter protocols have their bindings unticked.

I have this setup using IPX/SPX for my local network (2 x WinME and 1 x Win98SE) and it works well.

Re: TCP OR NetBEUI

Just a question,

I used AnalogX before for sharing my DSL connection, However, a visit to ShieldsUp at www.grc.com discovered that certain ports have been left open by the AnalogX program, despite having Zonealarm installed (and set to its highest security settings).

Does that make AnalogX a security-compromising program or do other internet sharing software do likewise? If so, would I be better off using a hardware router that (supposedly) allows me to share DSL between computers and doubles up as a hardware firewall?

Thanks! ^_^

Re: TCP OR NetBEUI

Dwi D,

I am not experiencing the same problem. I have leak test from www.grc.com and it can't get past zone alarm set on medium security. That is the case both without analogx proxy running and when it is running.

A router and hardware firewall would be better, but an expensive option I think.

Re: TCP OR NetBEUI

After many hours spent trying, I have never had success at getting "Microsoft Networking" or "Internet Connection Sharing" to work with TCP/IP alone.

For some reason if you install both NetBeui and TCP/IP as protocols on both your PC's you will have success. I recommend that you tick the NetBeui as the default proctocol on both PC's as this prevents "File and Printer sharing" being used over the internet, which only works on TCP/IP. NetBeui is not designed to work over the internet, only local networks.

I have also found it easier to network and share internet connections using "Sygate Home Network", which is much easier to work with than its Microsoft equivalent. But it does cost money. See www.sygate.com

I'm very delighted to have registered with this website and I will be looking forward to meeting together with everyone in here in time
