Epson C67 Printer using too much ink? (9 posts)

I have just recently bought a new Epson Stylus C67 printer. The problem I have is that I have only printed 4 pages worth of text (around 150 words altogether), using Epson's Text Quality mode. Epson's Ink Monitor system, however, displays that I have used 50% of my black ink (T0631) tank!

So I'm wondering if this is normal since the Epson booklet did mention something about charging the ink heads with ink the first time ink is used in the printer. However, only getting 4 pages of text out of half an ink cartridge is something I would think is ridiculous! Someone please inform me about this...

Re: Epson C67 Printer using too much ink?

Danny,

The Status Monitor is only really a guide and is not really a true indication of ink usage. Even Epson's estimated print quantity that they put in their tech data is only a very rough guide.

I have an Epson 925 and recently had a cartridge that was basically empty when fitted- Only went for a few pages and then stopped.

Of course ink usage is dependant on actual print quality used- the lesser the quality- the less ink is used.

Re: Epson C67 Printer using too much ink?

You are panicking prematurely.

There's not much ink in ink cartridges, and charging the ink heads would have used a fair bit of it. That's not going to happen again. You'll get a lot more than 8 pages out of your ink cartridge. Probably at least 20 or 30.

Don't panic prematurely. Wait until you find out how few pages you get out of the cartridge, then panic. It may give you some personal satisfaction abusing Epson. But they can ignore because they know you'll discover if you switch to any of their competitors' products it'll be exactly the same.

Believe me, I've learned from my Brother printer/copier/fax/scanner/answering-machine which has to be left turned on to do its job of answering the phone, but because its left switched on cleans its heads a couple of times a day and uses up all the ink in the ink cartridges.

This is how they all can sell machines as complicated as ink jet printers so cheap. By making lots of money selling ink jet cartridges at huge prices that have almost no ink in them.

There is a solution getting closer. Colour lasers are now coming down drastically in price. They still look expensive in initial purchase price, but they don't look nearly so expensive when you factor in the cost of a couple of sets of replacement ink cartridges a year.

Re: Epson C67 Printer using too much ink?

OK Thanks to everyone for helping me out on this issue. Well Epson has responded to me and has assured me that the next ink cartridge would run to it's full capacity.

I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Thanks again.

Re: Epson C67 Printer using too much ink?

It doesn't matter which brand/model of printer you buy you'll find that the cartridges don't have much ink in them.

Replacements do or you could try filling your own using an inkjet refilling kit. I have Canon, Xerox and Epson printers here and using Calidad replacement cartridges I see no degradation of print quality. A refil kit from Inkwell Australia www.inkwell.com.au is excellent value too ............ 8 refills each of Cyan, Magenta and Yellow + 14-18 Black refills for around $65.00 ......... complete kit including tutorial CD

Ignore what the printer manufacturers tell you about generic inks -- they just want to sell you their high priced replacement cartridges.

Re: Epson C67 Printer using too much ink?

Hi Danny,

Don't worry to much about this, if it is the first time you have installed a cart. (ie- printer straight out of the box)...

Yes, this could be due to the printer "charging/priming" the heads, however this is not normal for it to be quite so much ink...

Don't worry at this stage, use them until they run out, and then see how you go with the next lot of ink carts, if the same things happens then take it back, if not then everything should be fine...

A few years back Epson were in court over the amount of ink the printers required to 'charge' this has seen been changed now, and improved, therefore see how you go with the next set...

I actually have a lot of customers how have also found this happen, however come second time around, all is forgiven! :)

Good luck, and let me know if there is anything else you run into trouble with.

Often with laser printers the toner cartridge supplied with a new machine is only good for several hundred copies instead of about 2500 in a replacement cartridge. It is called a starter cartridge. It is possible that manufacturers are using similar tricks with ink jet printers. If you combine that with charging the print heads then that could explain what is happening. Did I read that Epson wasn't too bothered by it? That is they seemd to think it was not much of a problem. Possibly they know the answer but would not let on. Sometimes it is stated in the manual that the original cartridge is limited but who reads manuals?

Re: Epson C67 Printer using too much ink?

Thanks everyone for your help. Its October now, so thats 8 months of using the Epson C67 printer.

I have to admit, the Epson C67 uses a lot of ink, both from the fact that the printer has relative smaller ink tanks and uses a large amount of ink to 'charge. Ink is used up the most when things go wrong, such as when a sheet of paper jams, as the printer goes through 'automatic head cleaning' which uses a great amount of ink.

I've gone through 3 black ink cartridges (2 high-capacity), and 2 sets of the 3 colour ink tank set in 8 months. Roughly $100 worth of ink to print around 250pages of text and 20 colour photos. I'm be testing out alternative brand inks to see if its more cost effective.

However, nothing wrong has happened with my Epson printer so far, so thats good news. This was quite different to my previous HP 610c which pretty much died after the first ink replacement.

Thanks again to everyone,

Danny
