80486 RAM Upgrade & CMOS Conflict (5 posts)

Dear Help Screen,

I have an old 80486 DX-40 PC running MS Office 4 with the
following specifications:
Windows 3.11 and DOS 6.22
AMIBIOS (C)1993 30X-VS-XX-CP
8Mb RAM (8x1Mb sticks)
VESA local bus
210 HDD

In the hope of enticing one of my children to use it at university for typing assignments, etc (in lieu of buying a second-hand Win9x PC), I dusted it off and added 16Mb of RAM. I replaced the first bank of 4x1Mb sticks with 4x4Mb sticks and retained the second bank of 1x1Mb sticks (they are under the power supply and therefore not easy to remove).

On boot-up, the 20096 Kb of memory is recognised but this is followed by the error message:
CMOS memory size mismatch.
Run setup utility.
Press F1 to resume.

However, upon entering the Standard CMOS Setup the total memory installed is recognised: Base Memory: 640 Kb Extended Memory: 19456 Kb

My understanding is that I have 3 options from here: 1) Remove the second bank of 1x1Mb sticks. (This would involve removing the power supply unit first.); or 2) Run the CMOS AutoConfiguration with BIOS Defaults; or 3) Run the CMOS AutoConfiguration with POWER-ON Defaults.

I would be grateful for any advice you can provide. I am hoping a solution can be found whereby the full 20 Mb RAM can be retained (20Mb is better than 16).

Thanks in advance.

Is it an IBM PS2?
If so it is asking for the setup utility which came on a seperate floppy disc, and allowed changes to the computers configuration. Without the floppy you will not be able to successfully change your configuration. IBM used to provide images of these floppies on there web site, I do not know if they still do.

Under normal circumstances once you have gone into the BIOS and the system recognizes the total amount of RAM (eg 20mb in your case)- exit the BIOS - SAVING the new configuration. In other words choose the "save and exit"

Roy,

Unfortunately your older 486 board won't support anything more than 8MB RAM, and the BIOS won't accept combinations of ram size like newer 486 boards, let alone Win3.1 accessing more than 8MB.

Your best option here is to see if you can find a DX2-66 chip which will speed things up a bit. All ram slots on your board have to be filled and even if you had 8x4MB ram, there is an upper limit of 16MB accessible, but you could consider upgrading to Win95. Is it all worth it?

It is normal for a computer to report a memory size mismatch or memory error when memory has been added or removed from the computer. When this error is encountered, enter CMOS and ensure the settings for the memory are properly set and then save and exit from CMOS
