File sharing problem (7 posts)

I recently bought a new PC and wanted to copy over my old files via a network.

Both computers are running Windows XP. PC1 is my old computer and PC2 is the new. Now PC1 can see and share files with PC2, but PC2 can't share any with PC1.

I've setup so that both computers are sharing their files over the network, but when I try to access PC1 from PC2, I get the following message:

"PC1 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Logon failure: The user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer."

If someone could try and help me with this problem, i'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks :)

Re: File sharing problem

It's a pain, but XP is a secure operating system, so to access resources on PC1 you have to be logged on using a login and password that is defined as a user on PC1, even if you are trying to access those resources from PC2. You need to create an identical user with administrator-level permissions on both PCs, and login using it when you want to access anything on the other PC. You can always delete it later.

Re: File sharing problem

  1. Duplicate the account name / password on both machines. That should fix it. 2. Ensure both are in the same workgroup. 3. Disable firewall on both machines. 4. Ensure that file sharing is enabled on both. It is disabled by default, even on the shared documents folder.

Re: File sharing problem

I've done this and i'm still getting the same problem.

I can't think of anything else that could cause this problem, i've successfully networked PC1 and another before with no problems.

Re: File sharing problem

Faulty cable, faulty network card. The no permissions thing is almost always firewall related. Right click local area network, click advanced and make sure internet firewall is off on both machines. Yes I know it says internet, but it applies to LAN also.

Re: File sharing problem

Something else to check........had this prolem recently and found one computer was running two firewalls (XP and Zonealarm), might be worth a quick check to ensure this isn't the case on yours.

Re: File sharing problem

On PC1, try to disable File Sharing from the network connection properties, and then share it again. Then REBOOT BOTH machines.

This is a strange problem, and I find sometimes rebooting one or both machines will solve it. This is especially apparent when Share settings/passwords have been changed.

Please let us know if this works or not.
