Email programs (9 posts)

My computer (running Windows XP Professional) has two email programs - Outlook Express and the Other Microsoft Express. There is a conflict issue between the two. I want to uninstall the Microsoft Express program. In the Add/Remove list in the Control panel there is no listing of either, the only two shown are Microsoft Professional Edition 2003, and Microsoft Office Standard Edition 2003. What does the Standard Edition comprise of? Is this the one to remove? I would hardly think it would be the Professional option. Any help would be most appreciated, as I am scared stiff to do the wrong thing and lose vital programs.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Re: Email programs

Laurence,

I have never heard of Microsoft Express. Are you sure you don't mean Microsoft Outlook? It is the Email client provided with the Microsoft Office Suite.

Outlook Express on the other hand is the email client that comes with the Windows operating system. Each can be removed easily through the Add or Remove Programs part of Control Panel.

If you want to remove Outlook Express go to the Add/Remove Windows Components tab on the left and untick Outlook Express. Follow the prompts.

Outlook can be removed through the Add or Remove Programs Section and selecting the Microsoft Office entry. Select "Change" and then "Add or remove features" Here you will be able to remove any part of the Office Suite that you want. Just follow the prompts.

I would be very surprised if removing one of the programs were to resolve your issue (which you have kept secret from us) as both programs are designed to run happily together. Why not let us know what the problem is so that someone can offer some suggestions?

Cheers

Re: Email programs

Laurence,

I believe that you are becoming confused over what program does what.

It appears that you have Windows XP Professional (Operating System) and Microsoft Office 2003 Standard (Office Applications). XP has a mail program called Outlook Express and MS Office has a mail program called Outlook.

What you have to decide is WHICH mail program you wish to use. I believe that it's a matter of personal choice. Some prefer Outlook Express and others prefer MS Office Outlook. IMHO, using similar names for mail programs only confuses users.

My personal choice is Outlook as I had to use this program in my work environment and I am now used to it.

Outlook Express CAN be removed from XP - all you have to do is go into Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs and select You'll find Outlook Express in there.

There is NO real requirement to remove either mail program - all you have to do is decide which program you want to use and stick with that.

There is no requirement to use two mail programs.

Re: Email programs

Laurie,

Just make Outlook Express the default one and ignore the other. No Problems no worries.

Re: Email programs

Outlook Express and other things are an integrated part of Windows and won't appear in the Add/Remove list, which usually lists third party programs that you have loaded into your computer. Since they are part of Windows they can't be removed as such, just disabled.

At the left of the Add/Remove pane there will be an icon for "Add/Remove Windows Components" which is the one you need. Here you should be able to disable anything other than Outlook Express.

Windows is pretty fail-safe and it is hard to remove anything vital to the operating system unless it is deliberate and done in ways that are beyond the capabilities of us average users!

Paul.

Re: Email programs

Hi Laurence,

First thing before doing anything to your email client is to make sure you back up your email.

You can do this but going to the file search function in the start menu and searching the following files:

.wab (this is your windows address book file) .pst (these files are your post storage files - there may be more then one).

Simple find the location of these files and copy then to a safe location.

Now with regards to 2x Microsoft email clients on the same system, I am not to sure which you are referring to as 'two different' clients - Office 2003 was distributed with 'Outlook' and not Outlook express - OE was included with Windows XP however.

Best chat I could find to explain what was included. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Office_2003

If you remove one via the office setup function you should find you can still retain all other components to the office package.

Hope this helps.

Re: Email programs

I think you mean you have Outlook express and Outlook. Outlook comes with MS office and Express is a windows component. To removve Outlook Express, after clicking on add/remove programs from within the control panel, click on add/remove windows components.

To remove Ootlook, from add/remove programs click on MS Office and select Change.

Re: Email programs

Laurence, The previous responses can confuse if you are only a computer home user, as I suspect you are. As member of a computer group I find that many 'casual' home users use Microsoft Outlook. Don't bother - I have used Outlook Express exclusively for many years though I also have Outlook. The latter has functions a home user will never need (it's for business users), so home users should stick with Outlook Express for e-mail.

Secondly, you don't need to remove either program since neither will clash with the other. If I am correct about you being a home user, load up Outlook Express, go to the Tools menu, click on Options. On the General tab page you see Default Messaging Programs. If Outlook Express is the only mail program on your computer, no action is necessary, but if you also have Outlook or another e-mail program, you will have to click on Make Default. That's it - simple.

For further explanation, right-click on "This app...Mail handler" and click "What's This?"

Re: Email programs

Dear Dick Tracy, Thanks for your reply to my email programs and I comprehended most of it. My personal choice will be to use O/E, but why if I send a picture from my My Pictures under O/E, does the recording and subsequent viewing of it appear in the sent items of Microsoft Office? Finally does the procedure you advise to remove Outlook Express, apply in a similar manner, only this time removing Microssoft Office?

Thanks heaps in advance for your anticipated reply.
